Ashutosh Gowariker, who has directed films such as Lagaan, Swades, Jodha Akbar and Mohenjo Daro, took to Twitter to share the teaser poster of his upcoming film Panipat starring Arjun Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Kriti Sanon in lead role. Ashutosh Gowarikar is known for his period dramas, and his film Panipat will be based on the third Battle of Panipat.

The Third Battle of Panipat took place in 1761 and the Maratha Empire, under Sadashivrao Bhau, was defeated by the invading Afghani forces of Ahmad Shah Durrani. The battle is considered one of the largest and most eventful fought in the 18th century, and has perhaps the largest number of fatalities in a single day reported in a classic formation battle between two armies.

The battle was referred to in Rudyard Kipling’s poem “With Scindia to Delhi”.

“Our hands and scarfs were saffron-dyed for signal of despair,
When we went forth to Paniput to battle with the ~Mlech~,
Ere we came back from Paniput and left a kingdom there.”

Kriti Sanon shared the first poster of the film on Twitter and wrote,

This will be Arjun Kapoor’s first-period film. The actor shared his excitement on being a part of the film.

AGPPL (Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Pvt. Ltd) and Vision World have collaborated for the first time to bring the Third Battle of Panipat to the big screen. The film is slated to hit theatres on December 6, 2019.
