There is always a note of dissatisfaction that Marathi films don’t get theaters in Mumbai. It is often observed that Marathi films don’t get an opportunity at prime locations, and even if they do, they don’t last long. However, ‘Dashavtar’ has overcome all these hurdles and given consecutive three weeks of housefull shows in theaters like Maratha Mandir, Roxy, Sterling, Eros, Regal, INOX, Palladium PVR, Kasturba, Milap. It is noteworthy that these theaters are usually filled with Hindi, English, or Gujarati films. The fact that a Marathi film has drawn such a large crowd of both Marathi and non-Marathi audiences in such venues is definitely a matter of pride.

Even more joyful is the success in the Konkan region. Generally, films don’t get much response in Konkan. Even big Bollywood films don’t make the theaters housefull there. But ‘Dashavtar’ has completely changed this equation. The film is running in every single theater in all parts of Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Kudal, Sawantwadi, Pen, Kankavli, Mahad, Chiplun, and the audience has given an enthusiastic response. The plot, based on the environment, nature, the Konkani people, and the Dashavtar art form, has resonated so deeply with the local audience that they are expressing the sentiment, “We are getting to see a film that tells the story of our soil, our art, after a very long time.”

This film has not only earned money at the box office but has also worked to create a social movement among the people. The Konkani people are now seen taking the initiative to save the lands, sacred groves (Devraiya), and nature of Konkan. They have become aware of and are working towards the conservation of the Katashilpa (rock carvings) in Konkan. The film is proving instrumental in bringing back the glory of the Dashavatari folk art form and its artists, which served as the basis for the film. Shaking off the stagnation in the Marathi film industry, ‘Dashavtar’ has emerged as a leader in demonstrating the strength of Marathi cinema today.
