Nushrat Bharucha, the female lead of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, has spoken out openly against female genital mutilation (khatna) in Bohra community. Recently, a survey revealed that the shocking fact that three in four women in the community undergo female genital mutilation.
Nushrat, who herself belongs to the Bohra community, has taken a stance against it, and revealed that she has also signed the petition to stop the barbaric act. Asked by Unsung Bollywood to comment about it, Nushrat said, “It is a part (female genitalia) that is by nature. Just because you have a certain thought or conditions, no one has a right to stop you from doing what you want to do. If a girl wants to do it then it’s ok, but what can you ask a 6-7 year old girl.”
Sharing her personal experience, she said her own mother had undergone the inhuman procedure. “My mother only told me about it now, because the issue is in the news. I just could not think about it. It’s unimaginable. But, my parents did not do it me, neither will I do it to my children, not even my son.”
The actor, who has also featured in Pyar Ka Punchnama and Akaash Vani, was however optimistic that things will change. “You cannot get away with such things, especially in this age,” she concluded.
Nushrat was speaking at an event in Mumbai to promote her upcoming film Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. The film also stars Kartik Aaryan and Sunny Singh. Helmed by Luv Ranjan, who directed the two in both Pyaar Ka Punchnama films and Akaash Vani is set to release on February 23.
